Luis Munoz Marin K-8 School Unveils Tile Mural
Sheffield Lake, OH – October 2006 – On October 18, 2006, at 1:00 p.m., the unveiling of a new tile mural installation will be held at Luis Munoz Marin K-8 School in Cleveland at 1701 Castle Avenue. The tile mural was created by the students with guidance from ceramicist and Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio artist, George Woideck, and Luis Munoz Marin art teacher, Susan Gould.
The tile mural includes five panels, each featuring the style of a prominent artist: Romare Bearden (African-American), Vincent Van Gogh (European), Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Native American), Frida Kahlo (Mexican) and Andy Warhol (American). The students analyzed each artist's style and created a design in that style without copying the artist's work. Five classes participated, one each from 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
“An important goal of this project is to provide opportunities for children that will build their self-esteem, enhancing their ability to perform both creatively and academically,” notes Marsha Dobrzynski, Executive Director of Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio. “The students can take pride in helping to bring a beautiful mural for the enjoyment of their school.”
“We are very excited to bring an authentic art experience to our students, and we are grateful for the support we have received from MBNA and the community to make it happen,” said Jamie Lindsey, Luis Munoz Marin School Principal.
The press and public are invited to attend the mural unveiling at the school, which will be held in the art room, room #201 on the second floor of the building.
