A Community Embraces Reading
For several weeks this past fall, Warrensville Heights Middle School students participated in the Big Read, an NEA grant program implemented by Young Audiences to improve reading and literacy skills. Students read and discussed Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, and Young Audiences artists Jimmie Woody (theater) and Augusto Bordelois (visual art) helped emphasize important aspects of the book about social justice through theater exercises and by creating a mural that will be displayed in the school.
Lori Crum-Glen, Warrensville Heights Middle School’s principal, said that “…the Big Read project was outstanding. With the help of families and community members, our students really got excited about this book, and I think we’re bringing back a love for reading at Warrensville Heights Middle School. Having Young Audiences artists work with our students definitely increased the students’ interest in reading the book and made it lots of fun!”
A big thanks to the organizations who helped support the project, including: the National Endowment for the Arts, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Warrensville Heights Branch, Marcus Thomas LLC, New Image Media, South Pointe Hospital, Cuyahoga Community College – Eastern Campus, Sherwin Williams and Suburban Pavillion Inc.
