The Initiative for Cultural Arts in Education (ICARE) is a Cleveland-area program that supports long-term arts-focused educational partnerships between the Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD) and the Northeast Ohio cultural community.
ICARE seeks to improve student achievement in both the arts and academic subjects. (When education includes arts-integrated programming, principals see an improved school climate, teachers see a different perspective on their students’ abilities, and students work more cooperatively and with more confidence and interest.
In addition, in-depth arts programs can increase standardized test scores:

OPT Performance Compared to Semesters of Arts Integrated Programming
Fourth grade students with three to six semesters of arts-integrated programming performed significantly higher on 2004 Ohio Proficiency Test (OPT) in reading, writing, math, science, and citizenship when compared to students with only one or two semesters of arts-integrated programming.

Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio has also participated in a national arts and literacy program funded by the Ford Foundation called “Arts for Learning.”
An independent study of this program shows that integrating reading and writing with the arts has substantial, positive effects on student achievement in literacy and on students’ motivation to read both inside and outside of school.
